The two songs in Oblivion playing on the record player at Tom Cruise house by the lake in the forest

In the movie Oblivion Tom Cruise's character has a number of old records at his house by the lake in the forest. During the film he got around to playing two of them, the first song that he played on the turn table when he was at the house alone is

The Weight

by

The Band

the second song, and probably the more famous one that played when he was there with his wife is

A Whiter Shade Of Pale

by

Procol Harum

Overall the movie is an enjoyable experience. Coming from the same director that did Tron Legacy, Oblivion has many of the same qualities and suffers many of the same shortcomings, although I probably shouldn't discuss that here since I don't want to spoil anything. All I can say is that the film has the same great visual style as Tron, I wish I could see the director's house to see if it has the same great ultra modern look as the homes of both protagonist in the two films. It is also nice to see Tom Cruise back in a good big budgeted movie again.

for the song during the end credits see here

  10. A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum 1967
original lyrics written by Keith Reid
    We skipped the light fandango
    turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
    I was feeling kinda' seasick
the crowd called out for more
    the room was humming harder
    as the ceiling flew away
when we called out for another drink
    the waiter brought a tray

and so it was that later
as a mirror told its tale
that her face at first just ghostly
turned a whiter shade of pale

She said: "There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see"
but I wandered through my playing cards
    would not let her be
    one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might just as well've been closed

and so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face at first just ghostly
turned a whiter shade of pale..

    A Led Zeppelin – Ramble On – 1969
original lyrics co-written by Jimmy Page & Robert Plant
Leaves are falling all around, It’s time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I’m much obliged for such a pleasant stay.
But now it’s time for me to go. The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain, and with it pain, and it’s headed my way.
Sometimes I grow so tired, but I know I’ve got one thing I got to do . . .

    [Chorus]

Ramble On, and now’s the time, the time is now, to sing my song.
I’m goin’ ‘round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way.
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Got no time to for spreadin’ roots, the time has come to be gone.
And to’ our health we drank a thousand times, it’s time to Ramble On.

    [Chorus]
Mine’s a tale that can’t be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T’was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her….yeah.

    [Chorus]

Gonna Ramble On, sing my song. Gotta keep-a-searchin’ for my baby…
Gonna work my way, round the world. I can’t stop this fellin’ in my heart
Gotta keep searchin’ for my baby. I can’t find my bluebird!
