How Does Sam Worthington Keep Getting Lead Roles in Big Budgeted Blockbuster Movies

Avatar, Terminator Salvation, Clash Of The Titans, Wrath Of The Titans, this is an impressive list of big budgeted block buster movies. What is even more impressive, or more accurately "unbelievable" is the fact that they all have Sam Worthington starring in a lead role.

I just don't understand why he keeps getting these parts, or why they keep casting him. I don't know if he is a bad actor or not because the scripts he is given in these movies acting wise are pretty horrible, but he certainly doesn't help to make them better. I mean every time I see him onscreen I keep thinking that I am watching a B-movie, even though all the special effects onscreen clearly cost several hundred million dollars. His overall personality, the way he looks, the way he speaks just lacks any sort of charisma or appeal. In fact his performances seem to lack any sort of real emotion except for this constant fake angry tortured soul look he has got on all the time.

But there might be two reasons why directors keep using him. Firstly he might be relatively cheap, and all the money saved on actors' salaries could be spent on even more special effects. Secondly all these blockbusters he has been in so far have done well to really well at the box office, even though most people who have seen them don't think they are very good movies...but who cares, by that time they have already taken your cash at the box office.

Wrath Of The Titans Sucks, Deja Vu

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Seeing Wrath Of The Titans was for many reasons a deja vu experience for me. Firstly because it reminded me of the last film I just saw, which failed to really fulfill it's potential, that movie was The Hunger Games. More Importantly though, because it seems like a ripoff of it's own prequel, Clash Of The Titans.

After seeing Wrath Of The Titans, someone asked me if the movie was good or not, surprisingly my first thought was "I don't really know". I can't say that the movie was really bad, but I can't say that it was good either, which I guess makes it kind of bad.

This got me thinking about how I was looking forward to seeing it, thinking that the  producers would have learn from the mistakes keeping the first one from being a great movie. Instead, not only does it makes exactly the same mistakes as the first movie, if you really look at it, it IS exactly the same movie. Maybe the producers wanted to stay with the current trend of doing remakes, but even they knew better than to do a remake of a movie less than 3 years old (and was itself a remake), so instead they decided to "tweak" the movie in the slightest possible way.

Here are the list of similarities (carbon copies) between the two movies.

1. Changing 3 letters from the title from Clash Of The Titans to Wrath Of The Titans...people will never know it's the same movie.

2. At the beginning of the movies, Hades trick Zeus leaving him in a hapless position waiting for his Demi-God son Perseus to come and rescues him.

3. In order to save the universe Perseus must go on a long journey to obtain the magical item that will be use to defeat the final boss.

4. Both journeys involve going to find a person who can point him in the right direction and both journeys end up in the underworld.

5. In both movies Hades has a powerful male warrior ally who keeps trying to stop Perseus from completing his journey.

6. Both said allies wanted revenge against Zeus who has done them wrong. In the first movie it was a warrior king whose wife Zeus raped and in the second movie it was Ares the god of war, son of Zeus who felt Zeus loved Perseus more than him.

7. Both said allies also almost welcomed death when they were killed by Perseus.

8. In both movies there is a woman skilled in combat who comes along to help on the journey, and ended up being Perseus love interest.

9. In both movies the final bosses are large mountain sized lumbering monsters who doesn't do much before being killed.

10. At the end of the movie Perseus rides in on Pegasus just in time with the magical item to kill the final boss.

11. The final bosses are killed so easily you have got to wonder why the gods don't just go get the magical item and do it themselves.

As you can see the list is quite a long one with many major plot points and the same scenes. So seeing pretty much the same movie I saw two years ago really detracts from the enjoyment. Apart from this there are also other minor points that further bring the movie down. I mean we are suppose to be rooting for Zeus who is apparently a good god, but from the plot you have got to wonder who the bad guy really is. I mean he was the one who came up with the plot to overthrow his own father and imprison him for eternity, with the help of his brothers. After succeeding he then betrays his brother Hades and banish him to the underworld...wow what a good guy. The plot of the two movies are also slightly inconsistent, I thought they said that the Titan was defeated by the Kraken in the first movie, but in the sequel it was conveniently changed to the Spear Of Tream.

Why Remake Total Recall?

Another Remake!!! Arggrhhh!?@#$ Like many other people that was my first thought. I mean it would have been understandable if they want to do a remake because the first film was badly done, or because the special effects capabilities back then wasn't good enough to do the story justice, but clearly neither of these is the case.

Just like everyone, I was cursing at Hollywood in disbelief at it's lack of creativity, surely if they can't think of something completely new, it can't be that hard to come up with a similar type of story and at least make a new movie that we haven't seen before.

When I started to think about it more however, I realized there might be a more important reason to why the studios keep making these remakes of hit movies, and that of course is why any movie is authorized to be made at all by the suited executives...MONEY. By choosing to do a remake of a hit movie, instead of a brand new one, they might at least have some level of insurance that the movie will break even. That is because statistically, a large portion of the people who saw the original will also go to see the remake, whether they, like me are complaining that it is a remake or not.

The Hunger Games Sucks

SPOILER ALERT

Ok so saying the movie sucks is probably unfair, it wasn't a bad movie, in fact it was somewhat enjoyable (if you didn't have overly high expectations before watching it). It only sucks relative to the many amazing reviews it has been getting, and relative to the great movie it had the potential to be.

I think the main problem is the "Hunger Games" part of the movie itself. The film had an interesting setting and plot, and the first part of the movie did a good job of setting the scene, dark atmosphere and back story, to me this was probably the most enjoyable part of the movie.

Things however, goes downhill very quickly once "The Games" start. What is supposed to be the final climax of the movie, the event that a large chuck of the film (nearly an hour) had been spent building up to, turns out to be a complete anticlimax.

From what we have been told The Hunger Games is the ultimate test in brutality, survival against the elements, and against other contestants. Well first off it seems like they were strolling around their local park, maybe they should have consulted Bear Grylls for the set design of the arena. The dark tone that the first part of the film has set is also quickly loss when the contestants behaves like stereotypical teenagers you might see in numerous generic high school flicks, with the mean popular kids, the outsiders and the bullied, also somehow all perfectly groomed and surprisingly clean despite weeks of brutal jungle combat. It might have been more effective and enjoyable if they instead act a bit more like the kids from Lord Of The Flies.

The fight scenes and action sequences are also really below par. All of them were short and not very exciting, as well as there not being many of them. Understandably maybe most of the core audiences this film was meant for (young girls) don't care too much, but I can't see nothing wrong with making the movie more enjoyable to all demographics, I mean it will only help the film do better overall and it is not like it will detract from the enjoyment of it's core audiences. Films like I Am Number Four has a similar target audience but it still had great action and fight scenes.

Lastly they could have made the main heroine (Katniss) a bit more capable during the games. It seems like she just survived through sheer luck, and from other people helping her for no apparent reason.

Despite the many negatives listed here, I still think the trilogy has great potential and hopefully the next movie will step it up a gear, maybe this first one was just an introduction to the franchise and as such it feels a bit...well...tweenie, which is understandable considering who the film was meant for, but lets give young people some credit, they are much more mature than adults tend to think...heck they are probably more mature than most adults.

PS. In a way this film is very similar to the reality TV competitions like The Voice or American Idol, where I find the auditions and trainings at the beginning are more fun to watch than the actual competition itself.

Leonardo DiCaprio Highest Grossing Movies

1. Titanic - $601,000,000

2. Inception - $292,000,000

3. Catch Me If You Can - $165,000,000

4. The Departed - $133,000,000

5. Shutter Island - $128,000,000

6. The Aviator - $103,000,000

7. Gangs Of New York - $78,000,000

Leonardo DiCaprio is the kind of guy people usually find really easy to hate. The ultimate teenage heartthrob, he is filthy rich, and he has got a list of swimsuit model girlfriends long enough to fill a whole issue of Sports Illustrated on their own(hmm...now that's an idea). Yet I find myself having a lot of respect for him. Instead of doing the usual type of movies many with his looks would, his choice of films have been anything but typical, often taking on more serious, quirky or challenging roles.

ps. or maybe I pity him for dying in so many of his movies despite being the good guy.

Harrison Ford Highest Grossing Movies

1. Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope - $461,000,000

2. Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull - $317,000,000

3. Star Wars Episode VI Return Of The Jedi - $309,000,000

4. Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back - $290,000,000

5. Indiana Jones Raiders Of The Lost Ark - $242,000,000

6. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade - $197,000,000

7. The Fugitive - $184,000,000

8. Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom - $180,000,000

9. Air Force One - $173,000,000

10. Clear And Present Danger - $122,000,000

I did expect to see Star Wars and Indiana Jones in the list, I just didn't expect it to be so dominant. It seems despite a long career with many films under his belt, his earliest roles were still his most successful box office wise.

Bruce Willis Highest Grossing Movies

1. The Sixth Sense - $294,000,000

2. Armageddon - $202,000,000

3. Live Free Or Die Hard - $135,000,000

4. Die Hard 2 Die Harder - $117,000,000

5. Pulp Fiction - $108,000,000

For an all out action man it is a slight surprise that his highest grossing movie is a supernatural drama/thriller that does not involve any action at all (although it might be the only one on the list that he got shot rather than shot at), and it is also arguably his most critically acclaimed.

11. The Last Samurai - $111,000,000

12. Interview With The Vampire - $105,000,000

13. Vanilla Sky - $101,000,000

14. Collateral - $100,000,000

15. Valkyrie

Love him or hate him, you have got to admit that is one impressive list of movies he has been in.

Mel Gibson Highest Grossing Movies

1. The Passion Of The Christ (Director) - $371,000,000

2. Signs - $228,000,000

3. What Women Want - $183,000,000

4. Lethal Weapon 2 -$147,000,000

5. Lethal Weapon 3 - $145,000,000

6. Pocahontas (voice) - $142,000,000

7. Ransom - $136,000,000

8. Lethal Weapon 4 - $130,000,000

9. The Patriot - $113,000,000

10. We Were Soldiers - $78,000,000

11. Braveheart - $76,000,000

I think most people have forgotten what an amazing career Mel Gibson has...or "had", both as an actor and director. I think even if his film career would end right now (which arguably to many people it has already ended) he can still be proud of what he has accomplished.

Sylvester Stallone Highest Grossing Movies

1. Rambo First Blood Part II - $150,000,000

2. Rocky IV - $128,000,000

3. Rocky III -$123,000,000

4. Rocky - $117,000,000

5. The Expendables - $101,000,000

No surprises really with Rambo and Rocky taking up the top 4 out of 5 spots. The Expendables though still show that he has still got life in this business yet, to do other things outside the "Franchises". Also you have got to admire him for just staying true to what he is best at, and what the audiences want from him, as well as his ability to write and direct. Granted it's not the type of film you would watch for the acting or the sophistication of the plot, but they are still entertaining films to watch.

Arnold Highest Grossing Movies

Here is a list of Arnold Schwarzenegger highest earning films

1. Terminator 2 Judgment Day - $200,000,000

2. Terminator 3 Rise Of The Machines - $150,000,000

3. True Lies - $146,000,000

4. Total Recall - $119,000,000

5. Twins - $112,000,000

Wow...are you seeing what I'm seeing? All of the movie's names for Arnold's top earners begins with the letter T, and it is also the letter for the character he is most recognizable for "The Terminator". Maybe this should give him some idea about what movies he should choose to do in the future...or at least what to name them.
